Timothy Blomquist

I am both a self-taught and classically trained documentary photographer. My work is grounded in straight photography: I don’t chase “pretty pictures,” nor do I rely on filters or elaborate digital techniques. When I approach a subject, I have already previsualized the finished image before I utilize the camera. I want my photographs to look like photographs. I work almost exclusively in color – I think in color, I dream in color.

In every frame, I search for balance and symmetry, often through layers, ironic juxtapositions, or compositions without a single dominant subject. I’m drawn to people, places, and objects that might appear odd, humorous, or simply mundane. The ordinary attracts me, and I aim to elevate it into something interesting or intriguing.

A significant portion of my work centers on environmental portraits – images of people within the spaces that shape them. I never set out to photograph people, yet I’ve found myself compelled by the human experience and the brief access if gives me into their world.
